Field Day

Last week I got to go to my very first BGA field day. The kids participated in some Olympic style events such as long jump and the 50 yard dash and some Olympic hopefuls such as the dizzy bat relay and the huffy ball relay.

The big event however was "The Tug." BGA takes it tug-of-war VERY seriously. When you become a 4th grader you are assigned to be either a Greer or a Plato and keep your fraternity for the rest of your BGA career. There are various competitions throughout the year between Greers and Platos culminating in tugs at various levels. The seniors actually finish their high school career by tugging over the Harpeth River that flows through downtown Franklin, with the losers being ceremoniously pulled into the muddy river. So the 4th grade tug is very much a rite of passage for the 4th graders as they leave lower school and go on to middle school. It was hysterical to see these kids, decked out in blue and yellow camouflage paint and their special "tug gloves" and covered in body paint that said "Go Greers" and "Platos Rule." Though I would say the highlight of my morning was watching the teachers (who are also either Greers or Platos) do their own tug. Both times, much to my son's dismay, the Platos were victorious. There is always next year, Greers.
